José Andrés Takes on Sin City

Local restaurateur José Andrés has expanded his empire to Las Vegas with the opening of two restaurants late last year – a slightly reimagined Jaleo and China Poblano – a new concept showcasing Andrés’ take on the flavors of China and Mexico (dumplings and tacos anyone)? It appears that critics have taken an instant liking to China Poblano, marked by its recent inclusion as a semi-finalist for this year’s James Beard Foundation’s Best New Restaurant award (Andrés has also been nominated a fourth-consecutive year for the Best Chef award for his ground-breaking concept, Minibar). Both ventures are situated mid-Strip in The Cosmopolitan, which like most of the mega-hotels on Las Vegas Boulevard features a roster of celebrity chefs and trendy big-city imports looking to stake their claim in the desert. Andrés will be competing with the likes of Scarpetta (Scott Conant), Blue Ribbon Sushi (Eric and Bruce Bromberg), Comme Ça (David Meyer) and STK (The One Group).
