Public Bar: A True Meet Market

  • Public Bar in the Golden Triangle.
  • Showing every game on TV.
  • The big screen.

Public Bar in the Golden Triangle deserves a large portion of the credit for the recent onslaught of upscale sportsbars in DC. It’s been followed by Barcode and Redline, and most likely more coming in 2011. Public tries to be something for everyone. The first level a sportsbar. Second, a lounge. Third, a rooftop deck that almost makes you feel like you’re not in DC. And while it may not be the best at any one thing, it certainly makes a case as the best place to meet and be met.

The tri-level space is usually packed, oftentimes to the point where you could steam a dumpling on the second-floor lounge. Women beware: a girl could get pregnant just walking to the bathroom on a weekend night. You get the point.

The cuisine? Middle-of-the-road bar food. A grilled tuna sandwich or hamburger with sweet potato fries will certainly coat your stomach for the anticipated night of drinking, but, beyond that, it’s largely forgettable. My advice: wait for the soon-to-be-opened Shake Shack to get your grub on and leave Public to the suds.

Watching a game at Public is what draws the masses, but I have to tell you it’s a better place to fraternize then catch up on the Caps or Skins. Standing-room only rules for the most part, and it’s often so loud that you can’t hear the play-by-play (that’s if they have the sound on and aren’t blasting rap music). So if you must go for the love of the game, get there early and be prepared to fight off those lurking around your table.

So in summation, Public can be a good time. Just know what you’re getting into, and watch out on the weekend for legions of over-aged frat boys from Fairfax taking shots of SoCo and lime out of plastic cups. You might just like it.
