Sixth & Rye: Spike’s Deli Rolling into DC

Local celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn is attempting to fill a void in our nation’s capitol – the lack of a good deli. The former “Top Chef” contestant and future Next Iron Chef competitor will unveil his much-hyped kosher deli on wheels, Sixth & Rye, on May 20. According to The Jewish Daily Forward, the food truck is a project of the non-denominational Sixth & I Historic Synagogue.

Mendelsohn, chef/owner of Good Stuff Eatery and We, The Pizza, will work mostly behind the scenes on the project crafting the menu, with personal chef Malcolm Mitchell serving up the traditional deli fare with a twist to customers on Friday afternoons this summer and into the fall. The truck’s signature dish – a smoked corned beef sandwich with mustard on rye. The cart will also carry house-made coleslaw and potato chips, bring down New York pickles for sale, and stock black-and-white cookies. Menu items will range from $2 to $12.

Sixth & Rye will park itself in different neighborhoods throughout DC.

You can track Sixth & Rye on twitter @sixthandrye.
